Our Storywalk® at Mason Park in Laurel is a permanent outdoor reading experience that brings books to life along the walking path. Families can take a leisurely stroll through the park and enjoy a picture book displayed page by page on permanent markers. It is designed to encourage movement, literacy, and time together in nature, and it is free and open to all ages.
The idea for the Storywalk® began after our Children’s Services team was inspired by a webinar showing how other communities blended reading with outdoor spaces. We hosted our first temporary Storywalk® in 2022 using signboards at Gardiner Park, and the positive response encouraged us to dream bigger. After nearly a year of planning and community collaboration, the permanent Storywalk® at Mason Park officially opened with a Ribbon Cutting celebration in July 2025, attended by library staff, local families, community leaders, and supporters of the library.
This project was made possible through the help of local businesses, city leaders, and many individuals who chose to sponsor plaques and mounts in memory of loved ones. Their participation has created a meaningful tribute for the community and a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.
Our Storywalk® is updated regularly with new and seasonal titles to keep each visit fresh and engaging. We hope visitors will return often to walk the path, read together, and experience stories in a fun and memorable way.
We invite you to visit Mason Park, enjoy the current story on display, and share in this special blend of reading, nature, and community.
