Summer Reading

Summer Reading -all ages

During the months of June and July

Summer Reading is a program the library holds each year to encourage children and adults to read while getting incentives for doing so. We also have different presenters or events each Tuesday and Thursday. If you do not want to participate in the reading challenges, you are still welcome to attend the programs each week. Be on the lookout in May each year to get more details about the program and events!

FAQs:

  • How do I sign up?
All you have to do is tell a library staff member that you would like to pick up a Summer Reading Packet! All of the information you need will be inside this packet. This will include your reading challenge, scavenger hunt sheets, and contests.
  • How does it work?
You will receive a reading challenge in your packet/folder. The instructions are on the back on how to complete the reading challenge and prize levels.
  • My child cannot read yet; does this mean we can’t participate?
No way! For children that are unable to read, parents (or other readers) can simply read TO them! Listening and being engaged with a story still counts!
  • Do I have to attend the programs?
While the programs are SUPER fun, you do not have to attend the programs to earn prizes. The program calendar can be found in multiple places, including your Summer Reading Packets, our newsletter, social media accounts, etc.

There are many benefits to participating in our Summer Reading Program, including:
● Building a lifelong love of reading: Encouraging kids to read regularly, especially during the summer, helps to establish reading as a habit that can last a lifetime.
● Engaging reluctant readers: Fun activities and programs may inspire even the most reluctant readers to give books a try.
● Preventing the “summer slide”: Regular reading helps children maintain and improve their reading skills during the summer months when they’re not in school, preventing any loss of learning.
● Building a connection to the library: Participating in the program helps kids and families form a relationship with the library, making it a place for fun, learning, and discovery.
